Children's book: Sarah's Wasteful Ways.

The Brief
The brief task was to create a children's book that would be able to be published on Book Dash of which is a South African organisation that allows for people publish children's book to be downloaded and/or printed for free. The brief objectives were to make have the book available in two languages, that  the language was easy enough to read for children yet allowing room for somewhat complex words to allow for growth. Furthermore the book had to be at least twelve pages. The main idea for the story was to link it to a proverbial saying like "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" and expand the story through that, allowing for fairly cohesive, interesting and somewhat educational story.
The Finals
The Concept
The proverbial saying chosen for the story, 'Sarah's Wasteful Ways', was "For every grain of rice you waste is a tear you will cry in your life". This saying was chosen because it addressed ideas of creating a conscience mind to not waste, especially precious resources like food. The saying also allowed for a clever twist which follows the idea of not wasting opportunities, not being grateful for what you have and such, thus being clever little variations on waste. The red headed girl is Sarah whom is our protagonist with a mountain of hair and a personality size to match. The story will follow her little doings and things to illustrate the idea of not wasting ans such which always results in something bad happening to Sarah after she has wasted something. The story them resolves with her miraculous realization of what's happening to her and then her mum finally spilling the juice and telling Sarah with wasteful actions come unhappy consequences.
Development
Creating the overall style required a bit of inspiration and some doodling to come up with a style that was expressive as Sarah was while not overly complex with the time constraints at hand. This meant that hand rendering was the starting point and digital coloring was the finishing point for the sketches rather than jumping straight into Photoshop.
Character Drawings
The characters were first drawn by hand on paper until the basic line-work was complete and up to standard to then be scanned and then redrawn and finally colored in Photoshop.
Style and Colour Treatment.
The style relied on extreme detail on the character's posture and minute details on the face to capture the correct expression to help illustrate what the character is going though. Furthermore the color focused on a simple pallet of mostly warm oranges and browns with some light contrast on cool greens and blues to balance the compositions.
Line work and Clouring
The line-work and coloring needed special attention as both aspects are loose and unsaturated meaning they could easily blend and ruin the overall shapes by creating a blurry look. The line work was also used to give depth where color was not into artwork. The coloring was created to look like similar to water color and/or acrylic at times to give the book a feeling of fluidity as well as not to confuse the viewer on what to focus on thus creating a visual hierarchy.
